Acceleration and Deceleration Drill
This drill is meant to reinforce how to accelerate and decelerate while competing in a team environment. The drill will test athletes ability to decelerate in different ways and angles.
Before moving to this drill make sure the athletes are able decelerate with correct form.
Drill Setup
Split the team up into two even teams. The first cone is 5 yards to the first group of cones. There are many cones in the stack. Each cone in the group is laid out as shown Therefore the whole cone set up is 10 yards long. One rep is completed when the athlete passes the final cone in the group. That is when the next athlete will start and do his or her rep.
Give adequate rest so that the athlete performs each drill fresh. Do this drill 100% speed.
Types of Runs
- Sprint to the finish, but stop on the finish line using correct deceleration techinique. Do not overrun the line. Be careful when stopping. Don't run so fast where you get hurt.
- Hop left and right over the stack, upon reaching the end of the stack, accelerate and stop on the finish.
- Side suffle to the end of the stack, cut on the outside leg and shuffle back to the start where you immediately cut again. Shuffle to the end of the stack, upon reacing the end of the stack turn and run but stop on the finish.
- Lay on your stomach at the start. Get up and run through the stack and stop on the finish.
